first_imgFather John Misty is a man of simple taste and robust opinion. Known for writing ballads relevant to the present moment, he shares his newest single “Ballad of the Dying Man” from Pure Comedy due out April 7. The new song explores the human relationship with social media, and how we are brought down by our obsessive tendencies. “Eventually the dying man takes his dying breath/ But first checks his news feed to see what he’s ’bout to miss,” he sings. The lyrics read: “So says the dying man, ‘Once I’m in the box, just think of all the overrated hacks running amok/ All the pretentious, ignorant voices that will go unchecked/ The homophobes, hipsters and one-percent.’” Listen to the new track below:Listen to “Two Wildly Different Perspectives” from earlier this week:last_img read more

first_imgThe Grateful Dead‘s next live album release as part of their Dave’s Picks live series will feature a recording of the famous jam band’s January 1970 concert at The Fillmore East. The band announced on Wednesday that Dave’s Picks: Vol. 30 will be one of four live releases curated by Grateful Dead Archivist David Lemieux to arrive next year, along with some unique bonus items. The concert initially took place back on January 2nd, 1970, and would help kickstart what could be considered the most significant year in Grateful Dead history. Although the band was never revered for their studio recordings, they would go on to release their two career-defining albums a few months later with Workingman’s Dead in June followed by American Beauty in November. Some of the songs performed during the January 2nd concert, which would ultimately be featured on the two beloved albums, included “Casey Jones”, “Black Peter”, “Cumberland Blues”, “Uncle John’s Band”, “High Time”, “Dire Wolf”, and “Easy Wind”. The performance also featured a mix of early psychedelic Dead favorites including “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider”, “Dark Star”, and “The Eleven”.The 30th edition of Dave’s Picks will even come with a bonus disc containing two hours of the band’s performance from the following evening on January 3rd. The bonus disc will only be available for fans who purchase the album through the year-long subscription. In total, the live album series’ 2019 subscription will include Volumes 29-32, including an instant download of the Dead.net graphic, if you’re into that kind of thing. All four numbered releases will be delivered quarterly throughout the coming year. The previously announced Dave’s Picks Vol. 29 will feature the band’s February 26th, 1977  concert at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, California.Related: The Grateful Dead Announces 2018 Edition Of Free “30 Days Of Dead” Download SeriesLemieux recently discussed some of the plans for the 2019 Dave’s Picks subscription series in one of his outdoor video blogs, which can often be as entertaining as the live albums themselves.David Lemieux Seaside Chat: Dave’s Picks In 2019[Video: Grateful Dead]Deadheads can click here to pre-order their subscription for access to the four Dave’s Picks releases in 2019 for a reasonable price of just $115. Documenting a colonial past

first_imgA Harvard history professor and a team of current and past students are helping Kenyans to tell the story of their break from colonial Britain in a new exhibit in the East African nation’s National Museum. The exhibit, which is being designed so it can travel around the country in advance of the 2012 elections, is expected to be completed next summer, according to Caroline Elkins, professor of history and African and African American Studies, and chair of the University Committee on African Studies, who embarked on the project in collaboration with the Kenya Oral History Center.Elkins, whose own research focuses on the end of the colonial era, said the project is being conducted in collaboration with scholars from Kenyan universities. This summer, Elkins, doctoral student Erin Mosely, and recent graduates Megan Shutzer and Julia Guren spent several weeks in Kenya, conducting research and gathering artifacts — photos, identification cards, labor passes — that will provide the framework for the audio and videotaped interviews that will flesh out the exhibit.“A lot of the goal of this is for Kenyans to have access to different ways of understanding their own history,” Elkins said. “History is subjective. … It will allow them to make their own decisions on it.”The group, working with Kenyan scholars, traveled around the country to the national archives, mission archives, private collections, and the collections of the National Museum itself. Elkins said the work has helped build a storyline for the exhibit, which she said goes beyond a plain vanilla “nationalism and resistance” treatment, delving into the complexity of the times and of Kenya’s society, in which individual loyalties are sometimes divided between nationalism and the still powerful pull of tribal groups.“It’s not a ‘1960s, we all fight for freedom’ [story]. It has complexity,” Elkins said.Though much of the collecting of personal stories, through interviews with participants, remains ahead, Elkins said the researchers did have conversations this summer with some key individuals, including the nation’s first minister of foreign affairs, Njoroge Mungai, who is now 84. They also interviewed a World War II veteran, approaching 100 now, who served in the King’s African Rifles while Kenya was still under British colonial rule.Though the main beneficiaries are intended to be the visitors to the exhibit, including many schoolchildren, those working on it are learning as well.“They’re sitting there, listening to living history,” Elkins said. With the witnesses to the colonial era aging, Mosely said, the project is happy to have these firsthand accounts of history.“These stories are about to be lost,” Mosely said.Shutzer, who graduated from Harvard College in May, wrote her senior thesis on Kenya’s 2007 postelection violence. She said the project is a dream come true, bringing together her interests and skill. Shutzer will stay on in Kenya during the coming academic year to keep the project moving. She expects more Harvard students will help over winter break and possibly next summer.“I had plans to work in the D.C. schools next year. But this project was so incredible, I couldn’t leave it,” Shutzer said.Upcoming talk on KenyaOn Sept. 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Belfer Center will sponsor a talk titled “Kenya’s New Constitution: The Birth of the Second Republic” at the Askwith Lecture Hall, Longfellow Hall, 13 Appian Way, Cambridge, Mass. Open to the public, the featured speaker will be Elkanah Odembo, ambassador from the Republic of Kenya to the United States. In August 2010, Kenyan citizens approved by referendum a new constitution that sets up an American-style presidential system with checks and balances. The new constitution replaces a colonial-era constitution that had been changed over the years to give the president wide ranging powers.last_img read more

Deep into the wild

first_img“Deep learning,” already poised to transform fields from earthquake prediction to cancer detection to self-driving cars, is about to be unleashed on a new discipline — ecology.A team of researchers from Harvard, Auburn University, the University of Wyoming, the University of Oxford, and the University of Minnesota has demonstrated that the artificial-intelligence technique can be used to identify animal images captured by motion-sensing cameras.Researchers applied deep learning to more than 3 million photographs from the citizen-science project Snapshot Serengeti to identify, count, and describe animals in their natural habitats. The system was able to automate the process for up to 99.3 percent of images as accurately as human volunteers. The study was described in a paper published last month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Motion-sensitive cameras deployed in Tanzania by Snapshot Serengeti collect images of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and other animals. While the images can offer insight into a range of questions, from how carnivore species coexist to predator-prey dynamics, they are only useful once they have been converted into data that can be processed. For years, the best method for extracting such information was to ask crowdsourced teams of volunteers to label each image manually.“Not only does the artificial intelligence system tell you which of 48 different species of animal is present, it also tells you how many there are and what they are doing,” said Harvard’s Margaret Kosmala, one of the leaders of Snapshot Serengeti and a co-author of the study. “It will tell you if they are eating, sleeping, if babies are present, etc.“We estimate that the deep-learning technology pipeline we describe would save more than eight years of human labeling effort for each additional 3 million images. That is a lot of valuable volunteer time that can be redeployed to help other projects.” “We estimate that the deep-learning technology pipeline we describe would save more than eight years of human labeling effort for each additional 3 million images.” — Margaret Kosmala,“While there are a number of projects that rely on images captured by camera traps to understand the natural world, few are able to recruit the large numbers of volunteers needed to extract useful data,” said Snapshot Serengeti founder Ali Swanson. “The result is that potentially important knowledge remains locked away, out of the reach of scientists.“Although projects are increasingly turning to citizen science for image classification, we’re starting to see it take longer and longer to label each batch of images as the demand for volunteers grows,” Swanson added. “We believe deep learning will be key in alleviating the bottleneck for camera-trap projects: the effort of converting images into usable data.”“Our citizen scientists have done phenomenal work, but we needed to speed up the process to handle ever greater amounts of data,” said Craig Packer, who heads Snapshot Serengeti. “The deep-learning algorithm is amazing and far surpassed my expectations. This is a game changer for wildlife ecology.”First author Mohammad Sadegh Norouzzadeh expects that deep-learning algorithms will continue to improve, and hopes to see similar systems applied to other ecological data sets.“Here, we wanted to demonstrate the value of the technology to the wildlife-ecology community, but we expect that as more people research how to improve deep learning for this application and publish their data sets, the sky’s the limit,” he said. “It is exciting to think of all the different ways this technology can help with our important scientific and conservation missions.”This research was supported with funding from the National Science Foundation.last_img read more

first_imgTropical storm Cindy has forced the Gulf of Mexico operators to evacuate 40 production platforms, according to an update on Thursday by the U.S. authorities. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) Hurricane Response Team said it would continue to work with offshore operators and other state and federal agencies until operations return to normal and the storm is no longer a threat to Gulf of Mexico oil and gas activities.Based on data from offshore operator reports submitted as of 11:30 CDT Thursday, personnel have been evacuated from a total of 40 production platforms, 5.43% percent of the 737 manned platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.Apart from production platforms, personnel have been evacuated from one rig (non-dynamically positioned (DP) rig), equivalent to 6.67% percent of the 15 rigs of this type currently operating in the Gulf.No DP rigs have moved off location out of the storm’s path as a precaution. From operator reports, it is estimated that approximately 17.24 percent of the current oil production in the Gulf of Mexico has been shut-in. It is also estimated that approximately 0.32 percent of the natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico has been shut-in.After the storm has passed, facilities will be inspected. Once all standard checks have been completed, production from undamaged facilities will be brought back on line immediately. Facilities sustaining damage may take longer to bring back online.last_img read more

Can Separate Vacations Be GOOD For Your Relationship?

first_img 36 Views   no discussions Tweet LifestyleRelationships Can Separate Vacations Be GOOD For Your Relationship? by: – August 12, 2011 Sharing is caring! Sharecenter_img Share Share Question: Dear Dr Greer, is it bad if me and my husband take separate vacations?Answer: It’s ok to take separate vacations as long as it isn’t something you are doing in anger or resentment. Lots of times couples just have different preferences and pleasures when it comes to fun and relaxing. One person’s ideal vacation is lying on the beach all day , reading a book and just soaking up the sun. Their partner, on the other hand, loves traveling to new places, checking out all the different foods and sightseeing. Paradise for one is a prison sentence to the other. If you like to go to new places but your partner loves to go to the same island each trip, you love to play tennis in a warm sunny climate and he loves to ski in the cold, you like to sleep in and get up whenever you feel like it and he likes to wake up with the sunrise and get a jump on a day of activity…. it may be time to consider doing your own thing. When you have these kind of differences, it can be like the gap in the Grand Canyon and lead to constant arguing. In these cases, separate vacations can be the ideal answer. They allow each person to truly look forward to and enjoy their passion without imposing it on their partner who, if they really don’t want to be there, can actually be a fun spoiler. While compromising is always a great way to go, sometimes to really have the vacation you desire, the best option is to go your separate ways and then reunite to share all the interesting highlights with one another.Who knows, the recap may sound so appealing that each of you may be more inclined to give each other’s “vacation” a try next time round.GalTimelast_img read more

first_imgVATICAN CITY — Pope Francis said in an interview with Germany’s Die Zeit newspaper published this week, the church should study whether married men of faith could be ordained. This could come as an answer to the shortage of priests around the world, which he calls an “enormous problem.”Father Stanley Pondo at St. Louis Church in Batesville says he thinks it would be difficult.Audio Playerhttp://wrbiradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Fr-Stanley-Pondo.wav00:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Pope Francis stressed that removing the celibacy rule is not an answer to the priest shortage.Currently, married clergymen that convert to Catholicism can become ordained.Father Stanley says it is unclear how this will affect the Catholic Church.last_img read more
