Beau Lund June 8, 2018 /Sports News – National Justify aiming for Triple Crown this weekend, guided by trainer who won it all 3 years ago Written by FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailiStock/THinkstock(ELMONT, N.Y.) — With the Belmont Stakes horse race slated for Saturday, the heavily favored Justify is looking to be the second Triple Crown winner in three years. The 3-year-old colt is a 4/5 favorite to win, according to Las Vegas odds, after impressive victories leading up to the event.A win for Justify would be Bob Baffert’s second as a trainer. He trained American Pharoah in 2015 when the horse won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes in Baltimore and Belmont Stakes in New York after a 37-year Triple Crown dry spell for thoroughbred horse racing. “I’ve never had a horse like him,” Baffert, 65, told The Associated Press. “His mechanics, his motion, just the way he did it. … This horse is starting to act like Pharoah.” Justify didn’t start racing until turning 3 years old, becoming the first horse in over a century to win the Kentucky that didn’t race as a 2-year-old.The horse’s first victory at the Santa Anita Park in California a few months ago convinced Baffert that he might be training a champion. Justify had to win the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. He edged out Bolt d’Oro, which was his ticket to the Kentucky Derby.Justify dominated the Derby last month but won the Preakness in a closer race two weeks later. Still, Baffert sees similarities between American Pharoah and Justify, he told the AP.Their strides and running styles are comparable, Baffert said, adding that they both had similar struggles in their races leading up to the Belmont event. “They’re two different type of horses, Pharoah and this guy,” Baffert told the AP after Justify won the Preakness. “I think I see a lot of resemblance in these two, the way they move.“When I worked him after the Preakness, American Pharoah, when he would breathe, he was like he was a machine. And this horse is getting there.”Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.
The Turl Street shop Celebrations is set to close after over 25 years of trading. The fancy-dress shop was opened in 1992, and has since proved popular with students celebrating end-of-year exams and looking for interesting bop outfits. However, it is due to close on 30th November due to losing business to competitors.Clare Denton, who runs the shop, has noted the effect that the redevelopment of the Westgate Centre has had. She said: “It’s a heartbreaking decision but we really don’t have any choice because our footfall has reduced significantly since the Westgate Centre reopened.“I don’t want to close but I have no choice without getting into lots of debt. A report came out recently saying footfall has gone up 8.9 per cent in the past year but I don’t thinkthat is throughout the city centre.“People are parking at the Westgate, shopping at the Westgate and then driving home – they are not bothering to venture out into other parts of the city.”Celebrations is located on premises owned by Lincoln College, whose high rents have also been a factor in the decision to close the shop, according to Mrs Denton.Mrs Denton added that Celebrations was the last independent joke shop in Oxford city centre, and did not have any plans to trade online. She said: “I do want to thank customers for their loyalty and support over the years and for their sympathy and kindness.” read more

Shaggy, the NOLA Crawfish King himself, was all smiles as he served the eager crowd heaping helpings of his world famous boil, along with other regional specialties like jambalaya, locally caught seafood, pasta and more. The NOLA Brewery had their whole line-up of specialty craft beers pouring, including their “Daze Between” brew made specially for the occasion. Naturally, the centerpiece of the day was the funky jams being thrown down by the likes of Neville Jacobs, the Honey Island Swamp Band, Mike Zito & The Wheel, Colin Lake and Johnny Sansone on the fests stages.Colin Lake kicked things off on the main stage with a rollicking, bluesy set that had folks trying desperately to dance and eat at the same time in the cavernous main stage area. Inside the brewery itself, a more intimate stage featured some impressive jamming from Johnny Sansone and Mike Zito that served as high energy guitar laden bookends for the Colin Lake set. New Orleans premiere rocking Americana act Honey Island Swamp Band had the ever growing audience singing along and enjoying tunes from their excellent new album, Demolition Day.Wrapping up the first day of the festival was a special set from the Neville Jacobs collaboration between Dumpstaphunk‘s keyboardist supreme Ivan Neville and soulful guitarist Cris Jacobs, formerly of The Bridge. Neville related the story of the new band’s formation, as he told us in an interview earlier this year, around a poker table. After recognizing Jacobs from various mutual festival appearances, the two bonded over a bad night at the tables and decided to try and at make something positive come out of their unlucky stretch, and the rest was history.Jacobs’ guitar style practically has its own southern drawl, and it fits well with Neville’s sweetness on the keys and gruff singing voice. Veteran drummer Benny Blade and Neville’s Dumpsta bandmate Tony Hall on bass round out a truly intriguing and original sounding line up.Their set was marked with a variety of remarkable covers mixed in with material from the band’s forthcoming album. An emotional tribute to the recently deceased Prince, including a emotional “Little Red Corvette” and a jubilant “I Would Die 4 U,” added to the many moving tributes that have been performed all around the city and on the stages of Jazz Fest. With the first day in the books the NOLA Crawfish Festival bolted out of the gate and set a high bar for the days to follow. Sunny skies and smiling faces were all around as the air was filled with wonderful music and the intoxicating aroma of fresh seafood. Check out some exclusive videos and photos from Day One below, and come by the NOLA Brewery today and tomorrow from 3-10 PM for hours of funky tunes and delicious food!Honey Island Swamp Band:Neville Jacobs “Wasted”: read more
The Lions are coming off a disappointing 3-12-1 season in which quarterback Matthew Stafford missed eight games. Coach Matt Patricia enters a pivotal third season looking to build off a strong NFL Draft in which the Lions added cornerback Jeff Okudah and running back D’Andre Swift.Detroit will face a tough schedule that includes the NFC South and AFC South, and the challenges of the NFC North will not get any easier. The Lions were 0-6 in division games in 2019. Here is a complete breakdown of the Detroit Lions’ 2020 schedule, including dates and start times for all 16 games and our early prediction.NFL OFFSEASON 2020:Draft grades | Power rankings | Best free agents availableDetroit Lions schedule 2020Below is the Detroit Lions’ complete schedule for 2020.WeekDateOpponentKickoff timeTV1Sept. 13vs. Bears1 p.m. ETFox2Sept. 20at Packers1 p.m. ETFox3Sept. 27at Cardinals4:25 p.m. ETFox4Oct. 4vs. Saints1 p.m. ETFox5Bye—6Oct. 18at Jaguars1 p.m. ETFox7Oct. 25at Falcons1 p.m. ETFox8Nov. 1vs. Colts1 p.m. ETCBS9Nov. 8at Vikings1 p.m. ETCBS10Nov. 15vs. Redskins1 p.m. ETFox11Nov. 22at Panthers1 p.m. ETFox12Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving)vs. Texans12:30 p.m. ETCBS13Dec. 6at Bears1 p.m. ETFox14Dec. 13vs. Packers1 p.m. ETFox15Dec. 19/20at TitansTBDTBD16Dec. 26/27vs. BuccaneersTBDTBD17Jan. 3vs. Vikings1 p.m. ETFox(For Canadian viewers, each game can be streamed on DAZN.)Detroit has six games on the schedule against teams that won 10 or more games in 2019, including the home-and-home series with the Packers and Vikings. Houston and New Orleans also won 10 games each.Detroit has been a miserable road game under Patricia with a 4-11-1 record, and that will be tested against the NFC South and AFC South teams on the schedule. Weather should not be a factor in those games, and two (Atlanta, Arizona) are inside.MORE: Strength of schedule for all 32 teams in 2020Lions strength of schedule & predictionDetroit’s opponents had a combined record of 134-121-1 last season, a winning percentage of .524. The Lions are tied for the fifth toughest schedule by record as a result, and seven of those games are against playoff teams from 2019.Tennessee and Houston are tough cross-over editions to the schedule. Detroit is 3-5 in nonconference games under Patricia, so there is an opportunity to sneak in a few victories.Toughest tests: Four of the top eight all-time leaders in TD passes visit Ford Field this season. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers makes that trip every year, but Indianapolis’ Philip Rivers, New Orleans’ Drew Brees and Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady all come to Detroit this season. Stafford will have to be at his best in those games.Tennessee is the toughest road game outside of the division. That will be a clash of former Belichick assistants in Patricia and Vrabel.Biggest breaks: Detroit’s non-division opponents finished 14-24-1 last season, and the Titans were the only one that had a .500 record at home. Arizona, Carolina, Atlanta and Jacksonville are winnable games, and that could help Detroit hang around in the division.Detroit has lost its last three Thanksgiving games, and it will try to break that streak in that annual tradition. Bottom line: The Lions lost six division games by an average of 6.7 points per game, and that included a pair of heart-breakers against the Packers.Detroit has a talented roster, and this is yet another chance for Stafford to elevate the franchise into a playoff contender. Those division games will be the key, especially if the Lions can take care of the winnable games on the road.Record prediction: 6-10 read more
Real Madrid win the Spanish Super Cup.Paris, France | AFP | Several countries may be in the midst of their winter breaks, but the football goes on elsewhere, with Spain’s biggest clubs having an eventful few days in Saudi Arabia while the race for the title continues in Serie A and Ligue 1.AFP Sport looks back at the main talking points from the weekend:– Madrid invigorated by Super Cup win –Real Madrid’s success in the Spanish Super Cup cements their status as the form team in La Liga and might make Manchester City nervous too ahead of their Champions League showdown next month. After brushing aside Valencia in the semi-finals, Zinedine Zidane’s team beat Atletico Madrid on penalties in Sunday’s final in Saudi Arabia to secure their 11th triumph in the competition and first trophy this season. With Barcelona in a mess following defeat by Atletico, Real now look in a strong position to step forward in the title race while City no longer appear such a daunting prospect either. Real return to Spain invigorated.– Can PSG stick with ‘Fantastic Four’? –Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel has found a way of squeezing four of the world’s best attackers into his line-up in recent weeks and been rewarded handsomely for it.Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria and Mauro Icardi have been in outstanding form along with their team, the “Fantastic Four” contributing 58 goals between them since the campaign began. However, the question has always been whether Tuchel could afford to play all four together, and thereby risk leaving his team lacking balance, against stronger opposition. To that end, PSG’s display in drawing 3-3 with Monaco on Sunday will have left the coach with plenty to ponder as a Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund comes into view.Neymar scored twice and also forced an own-goal, but PSG were often left looking like a team cut in two when Monaco counter-attacked. They conceded three goals in a home league game for the first time since October 2010 and Dortmund — with an impressive attack of their own — will have found it interesting viewing.– Monaco impress under Moreno –In contrast, Monaco produced an encouraging performance in their first Ligue 1 match under new coach Robert Moreno. While their defence remains a problem, the principality side highlighted the strength of their own attacking arsenal — Wissam Ben Yedder, Keita Balde, Gelson Martins and Aleksandr Golovin cost a combined 130 million euros ($144.5m) while substitute Islam Slimani, who scored their equaliser, is on loan from Leicester City.Monaco will now be hoping to cause PSG more problems when the teams meet again on Wednesday at the Stade Louis II, where the home side have won their last six league games.– Lazio ‘click’ into Scudetto mode –Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi warned that his side have what it takes to lift a first Scudetto in two decades, as they sit third in Serie A six points behind leaders Juventus. The Roman club beat Napoli 1-0 for a club record 10th consecutive league win to overtake Sven-Goran Eriksson’s team’s run in 1998-99. Eriksson led Lazio to their last Serie A title in 2000.“What are we missing to win a Scudetto? At this moment I say very little,” said Inzaghi.Serie A top scorer Ciro Immobile brought his tally this season to 20 in the league.“We have improved a lot, something has clicked in our heads,” said Immobile. “We’re reaping what we began sowing four years ago. We must keep our feet on the ground, not lose our heads.”– Portugal’s Fernandes impresses suitors –Amid growing reports in England that Manchester United want to sign him this month, Portugal star Bruno Fernandes produced another impressive performance for his club at the weekend. The 25-year-old scored twice as Sporting Lisbon, who are fourth in the Portuguese league, won 3-1 at a Vitoria Setubal side who had asked for the game to be called off after almost their entire squad was laid low by a flu epidemic.Fernandes, who has eight league goals for an under-performing Sporting, has been strongly linked with a 70 million-euro switch to Old Trafford in the January window.Share on: WhatsApp read more
Facebook just escalated its ongoing tension with President Trump. On Wednesday, the social media company said it had removed a post from the president’s page for containing false claims about the coronavirus. The post was comprised of a video of an interview the president gave to Fox News on Wednesday morning.“This video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation,” Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement Wednesday evening.pic.twitter.com/wxCTuk4GdP— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 5, 2020 He added that the specific comments that went against Facebook’s rules were Trump’s false claims about children being nearly immune to the virus. The same clip was posted to Twitter by the Trump campaign, which was then shared from the president’s main account.Although this is not the first time that Facebook has removed content from the president’s page, it is the first time a removal has been due to its COVID-19 misinformation rules.Neither the president nor the White House have issued a response yet to Facebook’s action. read more
BILL NEAL:10 First of all, and just so you know, I am not at “My spot” for the game so stop looking for me. Second, and let’s be clear about this, WE – ARE – THE – STEELER – NATION…and we ain’t scared of no Baltimore Ravens! Steelers win by 7. Take it to the bank!:09 I see by reading my Pittsburgh Courier last week that I am not the only sportswriter for this historic newspaper that wants to give you Old School Music in verse huh?!?! I am just sayin’.:08 Speaking of “My style,” oops, did I say that out loud? Tell me if you remember the time, no really do you remember… “Remember the Time” by the late great Michael Jackson? Here ya go. “Do you remember when we fell in love. We were young and innocent then, on the phone you and me till three…do you remember girl.” Oh yeah. Just go back and pop that cassette in and while you’re at it remember just how “Bad” “The King of Pop” was and the “Thrill-er” he gave us all. Say what you want, anyway you want, about whatever you want regarding M.J., but one thing was, is and will always be indisputable, he was quite possibly the greatest entertainer of all time. And me, you and “Billie Jean” know “He Rocked Our World.” (Man I am good at this or what.):07 Take whatever position you want on Pitt quarterback Tom Savage, but NFL scouts have him on their radar screen and he certainly has all the tools. Tall, strong arm, good mobility, and heart. You think not? Does the name Joe Flacco ring a bell? Ya said the same thing about him before you ran him out of Pitt. Yes you did…yes you did…oh shut up…you did so!:06 The NFL says goodbye to one of their most colorful figures as Coach “Bum” Phillips dies at age 90. He was anything but a bum and proved his metal against Chuck Noll and the glory Steelers on many occasions. His most famous quote…”Yes, we the Houston Oilers have every intention on going to the Super Bowl…The problem is, the road to the Super Bowl runs through Pittsburgh!”:05 Well, you know they say deaths always come in threes. All you can hope for is you’re not the third. That being said, the Pittsburgh basketball community lost yet another great player. Buzzy Harrison, out of Uniontown, and former Pitt work horse, passed away last week. All I can tell you is he was an absolutely great guy. I mean, a really great guy and if you played against him, you better bring your lunch bucket cause you were going to get worked. Just ask anybody that had that misfortune during the glory years of the Connie Hawkins Summer Basketball League where “Buzzy” was an annual all-star. read more
