As soon as Tammi Reiss saw Dawn Staley play for the first time at a recruiting showcase before her senior year of high school, she knew she wanted to play with her in college. While most schools disguised their interest in the other, Virginia was the only school that was upfront with them. The Cavaliers wanted to reel in both prolific guards. Staley called Reiss and said she was about to commit to UVA. She asked Reiss to join her and thus the roots for a 28-year friendship were planted.“That was going to be my backcourt mate for four years,” Reiss said. “I wanted to win national championships. I wanted to play with the best. At that time, Dawn was the best.”Reiss, an assistant coach with No. 4 seed Syracuse (27-7, 13-3 Atlantic Coast), and Staley, the head coach for top-seeded South Carolina’s (33-1, 16-0 Southeastern), lived together as roommates and quadmates for three years at Virginia. They’ll meet again when their respective teams face off on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Both finished their college careers with multiple first-team All-ACC honors and Staley was named the Naismith Player of the Year twice. Together, they won three ACC titles, reached three Final Fours and made a national title game appearance.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textBut when Reiss looks back, she remembers nothing more from her days at UVA, from 1989-92, than the pranks she and Staley would play on each other and their teammates.“We were the pranksters of our team,” Staley said. “… Tammi’s got a great mind. She was probably the culprit behind everything. I just went with it.”During their freshman year, Reiss and Staley lived in a quad together in Tuttle Hall with current Clemson head coach Audra Smith and Allison Moore. Reiss and Staley had similar habits – staying up late, watching movies and joking around with each other. But Staley was roommates with Smith, whom Reiss described as an “old lady” because she typically went to bed at 9 p.m. When they realized which pairing worked best, Reiss and Staley ended up together. One Halloween, Reiss and Staley dressed up in all black to break into the apartment of Tonya Cardoza, who currently coaches at Temple, and “kill her” with shaving cream, water balloons and hammers. With black makeup and stockings on their faces and heads, the duo felt hot so they went to 7-Eleven for some Slurpees. They had forgotten how intimidating their costumes were and a worker at 7-Eleven called the police. The misunderstanding was eventually sorted out, but Cavaliers head coach Debbie Ryan did get a call from the cops.“Everyone probably thought we were immature,” Reiss said. “But we won and we had fun.”Another time, Reiss and Staley sent Smith to pick up food from McDonald’s. Reiss got dressed up into a full 6-foot werewolf costume that had red eyes. Staley’s job was to flick the light on when she saw Smith enter the building while Reiss set up behind the side of a wall.Smith walked in with a tray of drinks in one hand and a bag of food in the other.Reiss yelled “Rawr!” as Smith walked in. Smith chucked the drinks into Reiss’ head, screamed and ran faster than Reiss had ever seen her run.“She hated us. She’d walk around jittery all the time,” Reiss said of Smith, “because she knew we were going to get her.”Staley would receive care packages from home and Reiss eventually wanted to take them. So one time, Reiss challenged Staley that if she could make Staley throw up, Reiss could take her care package. There was a buffet where athletes could eat at and Reiss compiled salad, fish, mayonnaise, milk and a variety of other ingredients.Staley threw up and Reiss got the package.“Some of the things we did I can’t tell you because we’d probably be arrested,” Reiss said. “Needless to say, we had some really, really good times.”Reiss’ experience at Virginia is what has shaped her coaching philosophy and it’s shaped Staley’s too. At Syracuse, Reiss still sneaks behind walls in hotels and tries to scare players. She also mentioned South Carolina’s parody of Iggy Azalea’s ‘Fancy’ when pointing out similarities between their time at UVA and their current teams. A trip to the Elite Eight is on the line as they continue their quests for a national championship, something they didn’t accomplish as players.“We made incredible memories together,” Staley said. “Obviously we put ourselves in a position to make another memory.” Comments read more
MASON CITY — Mason City’s mayor is encouraging people to continue to use good social distancing practices and wear a face mask when possible.Bill Schickel says the number of cases in Cerro Gordo County has jumped 70% since the start of the month from 29 to 62 as of Wednesday morning. “Obviously this means we need to continue to take physical distancing seriously. This means staying six feet apart and wearing a mask when out and about. I know this is a difficult message, but it’s really what we need to do in order to get through this thing together, and we will get through it together.”Schickel says the uptick in numbers is due to community spread. “Our health department people say this is community spread, it’s not one location or one organization where this is coming from, so it’s coming from day-to-day contact.”Schickel says the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is doing a good job of tracking COVID-19 cases. “They have had two personnel on contact tracing. In other words, if you become in touch with someone that had COVID, then that person has to be notified and asked to self-isolate. They’ve actually doubled the number of people, they are up to four people now that are assigned to this contact tracing. The health department is concerned that if we don’t keep our physical distance, then these numbers will increase.”Schickel made his comments on the weekly Cerro Gordo County COVID-19 press conference as you heard live on AM-1300 KGLO. Share on: WhatsApp “It’s beyond calculation and beyond rationality.”NOT STAYING: Pique (right) and Neymar (left).– ‘Transfer of the century’ –However, in the French capital there is huge excitement at PSG’s Qatari-backed project landing a star name to finally make them feared among European football’s elite with even French president Emmanuel Macron enthused.“It adds attractiveness. Yes, it’s good news,” said Macron.“Neymar to PSG — the transfer of the century”, splashed Le Parisien’s front page on Thursday with the first five pages devoted to his impending arrival. The mood is understandably more sombre in Barcelona where attention has turned to who the Catalans can sign to replace Neymar in the month before the transfer window closes.Neymar’s Brazilian international teammate Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele have both been linked. There is also scepticism at the role played by PSG’s owners Oryx Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) at a time of political crisis for the energy-rich state which has been boycotted by its Gulf neighbours in recent months and will play host to the World Cup in 2022.Spanish newspaper El Mundo described the move as a “state signing.”But whilst La Liga protests at losing one of its biggest stars, Barca’s players have continued to wish their now former teammate well.“My friend I wish you the best in everything that comes!!!” Luis Suarez posted on Instagram alongside a picture of the two hugging.“Also thank you for your support, for everything that I learned with you and for the unique moments that we spent together!!!! Keep like this and never change love you little bro.” Neymar signs five-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain Paris, France | AFP | Neymar completed his world record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday when he signed a five-year contract, the French club announced. The 25-year-old Brazilian earlier broke his contract with Barcelona by paying a 222 million-euro ($264 million, £201 million) buyout clause.Barca confirmed Neymar’s lawyers “made the payment of 222 million euros in the player’s name” to release him from the five-year contract he signed just last year. His new mark is more than double the previous record set by Manchester United’s capture of Paul Pogba from Juventus last year for 105 million euros, leaving many commentators aghast at the rampant inflation in football transfer fees.Earlier, Spain’s football league threatened to stall the saga by refusing to accept a cheque presented by Neymar’s representatives at its Madrid headquarters.La Liga president Javier Tebas accused the French club of breaching UEFA’s financial fair play rules.Clubs can be sanctioned by European football’s governing body for making a loss of more than 30 million euros over a three-year period. However, UEFA insisted the move will not automatically trigger a failure to comply with FFP regulations.“The transfer of Neymar to PSG will have an effect on the club’s finances over several years but the impact of such an operation cannot be judged in advance, notably as PSG could well sell several players for a significant amount,” UEFA said in a statement to AFP.Barca added that they will aid UEFA in any future enquiry into whether the French side fall foul of regulations.“The club will pass on to UEFA the details of the above operation so that they can determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case,” continued the Barca statement.Leading coaches such as Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger and Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho lamented that the move could cause even greater inflation in transfer fees and player wages.“It also looks like the inflation is accelerating,” said Wenger, whose 21 years at Arsenal have been characterised by prudent spending. read more
VANCOUVER – A convicted child abductor will stay behind bars after a parole board determined he is still likely to harm a child if released from prison.A federal parole board decision issued earlier this month says 52-year-old Randall Hopley has not participated in rehabilitation programming and has declined to participate in psychological assessments.“Your offending behaviour has been described by professionals as difficult to treat and you have refused to participate in interventions while incarcerated,” the decision says. “There is no indication that you have lessened your risk to the community.”Hopley snatched a sleeping three-year-old Kienan Hebert from a second-floor bedroom in Sparwood, B.C., in September 2011. He kept the child for four days before returning him physically unharmed after Hebert’s parents made a public plea.Hopley later pleaded guilty to abducting the boy, breaking and entering and possession of stolen property. He was sentenced to more than seven years in prison, plus 10 years of supervision following his release. He was also designated a long-term offender after various courts have heard that he sexually assaulted young children while living in a foster home as a teen. The recent parole board decision notes Hopley has a long history of offences against children and displays “little remorse or understanding” of his criminal behaviour. The decision says Hopley will remain in custody because officials believe he still poses a threat to children in the community.“The board concludes you are likely, if released, to commit a sexual offence involving a child before the expiration of your sentence,” the decision says. The document recommends that Hopley completed a sex offender management program and demonstrates some insight into his crimes before his case is reviewed again next year. read more

This story comes a long way. From a Bangla band, not unlike so many in Kolkata in the 1990s, to a full-fledged album in 2014. The journey is a long one and obviously not an easy one, especially when it spans two continents and tries something very new. Shikawr (roots in Bengali) is a cumulated effort from musicians across two continents, coordinating through Whatsapp, Skype and Facebook! Shikawr is well-known singer Sahana Bajpaie’s first contemporary album. Sahana is better known for her work with Rabindrasangeet, Baul and folk songs. Also Read – CBI examines former ISRO chief Radhakrishnan‘Like most university-going lads back in late 90s growing up in Kolkata, I had a Bangla rock band – where I used to write the lyrics and strum guitars. Come 1999 I left Jadavpur University, left the city and started living a nomads life across continents and that was pretty much the end of doing any music,’ says Saptarshi Routh, the man behind the lyrics and the music for Shikawr. Between 1999 and 2014, Saptarshi lived across three continents, hardly ever touched the guitar, as he says. Also Read – Centre to procure pulses directly from farmers starting NovemberHe however, did the ‘B-School thing’ at Oxford, climbed the stairs that people usually climb, ending up as a director and European Practice lead at one of the world’s most respected research and advisory firm, Gartner. So perhaps the no-touching-the-guitar was not a bad thing! But well, that space of having done it all needed something more. Musicians are musicians at the end of the day! After realising, thanks to a friend, that he had pretty much done all that he wanted to and didn’t know what he wanted to do next, Saptarshi took a step backwards to his Bangla band days and started writing lyrics in Bengali. The journey, left behind after college, restarted for Saptarshi. ‘And then realising I have no one to go to, no band to form, I started composing. First time in my life (and I don’t have any formal music background, I was just a self taught and very average guitarist). Scary, I know. Even more scary was to approach Sahana, who has a pretty decent fan following, to ask her to sing – and I was one of the fans,’ Saptarshi says. Sahana agreed and clearly there was no looking back! Saptarshi feels that the singer agreed to join ‘forces’ because they shared some common perspectives – like loving and hating the city they left behind in equal measures and then some. All of these come to life through the lyrics Saptarshi penned. The next step was collaborating with Samantak, a very talented musician and singer from Kolkata who did the music arrangement and direction for Shikawr. ‘We agreed to do something unusual, that is to design the soundscape fully in the acoustic mode with no programming whatsoever. Using a host of relatively unconventional instruments like the cello, rabab, esraaj, accordion, harmonica et al. – giving it a distinct non-band like feel,’ says Saptarshi. ‘The whole project was designed and executed across two continents – London and Kolkata (Sahana and me in London, Samantak and my other singer, Gorki in Kolkata) so most songs took full shape over Skype/Whatsapp/Facebook and long distance phone calls. It was fun!’ Saptarshi adds. Now the finished product has hit the stands. And we for one cannot wait to find out how it all adds up for music lovers and critics. Even if you aren’t Bengali – find these guys and give them a listen. We have heard a bit and we assure you – you won’t regret it. read more
Google faced a major outage on Monday this week as it went down for over an hour, taking a toll on Google Search and a majority of its other services such as the Google Cloud Platform. The outage was apparently a result of Google losing control over the normal routes of its IP addresses as they instead got misdirected, due to a BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) issue, to China Telecom, Nigeria, and Russia. The issue began at 21:13 UTC when MainOne Cable Company, a carrier in Lagos, Nigeria declared its own autonomous system 37282 as the right path to reach 212 IP prefixes that belong to Google, reported ArsTechnica. Shortly after, China Telecom improperly accepted the route and further declared it worldwide, leading to Transtelecom and other large service providers in Russia to follow the same route. A networking and security company, BGPmon, who assesses the route health of networks, tweeted out on Monday that it “appears that Nigerian ISP AS37282 ‘MainOne Cable Company’ leaked many @google prefixes to China Telecom, who then advertised it to AS20485 TRANSTELECOM (Russia). From there on others appear to have picked this up”. BGPmon also tweeted that redirection of IP addresses came in five distinct waves over a 74-minute period: Another Network Intelligence company, ThousandEyes tweeted how a “potential hijack” was underway. As per ThousandEyes, it had detected over 180 prefixes affected by this route leak, covering a wide range of Google services. This led to a growing suspicion among many as China Telecom, a Chinese state-owned telecommunication company recently came under the spotlight for misrouting the western carrier traffic through mainland China. On further analysis, however, ThousandEyes reached a conclusion that, “the origin of this leak was the BGP peering relationship between MainOne, the Nigerian provider, and China Telecom”. MainOne is in a peering relationship with Google via IXPN in Lagos and has got direct routes to Google, that leaked into China Telecom. These routes then further got propagated from China Telecom, via TransTelecom to NTT and other transit ISPs. “We also noticed that this leak was primarily propagated by business-grade transit providers and did not impact consumer ISP networks as much”, reads the ThousandEyes blog. BGPmon further tweeted that apart from Google, Cloudflare also faced the same issue as its IP addresses followed the same route as Google’s. However, Matthew Prince, CEO, CloudFare, told Ars Technica that this routing issue was just an error and chances of it being a malicious hack was low .“If there was something nefarious afoot there would have been a lot more direct, and potentially less disruptive/detectable, ways to reroute traffic. This was a big, ugly screw up. Intentional route leaks we’ve seen to do things like steal cryptocurrency are typically far more targeted” said Prince. “We’re aware that a portion of Internet traffic was affected by the incorrect routing of IP addresses, and access to some Google services was impacted. The root cause of the issue was external to Google and there was no compromise of Google services,” a Google representative told ArsTechnica. MainOne also updated regarding the issue on its site, saying, that it faced a “technical glitch during a planned network update and access to some of the Google services was impacted. We promptly corrected the situation at our end and are doing all that is necessary to ensure it doesn’t happen again. The error was accidental on our part; we were not aware that any Google services were compromised as a result”. MainOne further addressed the issue on Twitter saying that the problem occurred due to a misconfiguration in BGP filters: The main takeaway from this incident remains that doing business on the Internet is still risky and there are going to be times when it’ll lead to unpredictable and destabilizing events, that may not necessarily be ‘malicious hacks’.
