Makeup Of A Fool, Good To You, The Stakes, Don’t Do It*, City Rain, Money Talks, Little Red Corvette#, I Would Die 4 U #, Dance For Me MommaEncore: Night People*The Band#PrinceA full gallery of photos by Rex Thomson, Marc Millman, and Jerry Moran can be seen below: The inaugural edition of the NOLA Crawfish Festival lived up to the hype with a perfect day of music, food and fun under the sun at the NOLA Brewing Company in New Orleans yesterday. Shaggy, the NOLA Crawfish King himself, was all smiles as he served the eager crowd heaping helpings of his world famous boil, along with other regional specialties like jambalaya, locally caught seafood, pasta and more.  The NOLA Brewery had their whole line-up of specialty craft beers pouring, including their “Daze Between” brew made specially for the occasion. Naturally, the centerpiece of the day was the funky jams being thrown down by the likes of Neville Jacobs, the Honey Island Swamp Band, Mike Zito & The Wheel, Colin Lake and Johnny Sansone on the fests stages.Colin Lake kicked things off on the main stage with a rollicking, bluesy set that had folks trying desperately to dance and eat at the same time in the cavernous main stage area. Inside the brewery itself, a more intimate stage featured some impressive jamming from Johnny Sansone and Mike Zito that served as high energy guitar laden bookends for the Colin Lake set. New Orleans premiere rocking Americana act Honey Island Swamp Band had the ever growing audience singing along and enjoying tunes from their excellent new album, Demolition Day.Wrapping up the first day of the festival was a special set from the Neville Jacobs collaboration between Dumpstaphunk‘s keyboardist supreme Ivan Neville and soulful guitarist Cris Jacobs, formerly of The Bridge. Neville related the story of the new band’s formation, as he told us in an interview earlier this year, around a poker table. After recognizing Jacobs from various mutual festival appearances, the two bonded over a bad night at the tables and decided to try and at make something positive come out of their unlucky stretch, and the rest was history.Jacobs’ guitar style practically has its own southern drawl, and it fits well with Neville’s sweetness on the keys and gruff singing voice.  Veteran drummer Benny Blade and Neville’s Dumpsta bandmate Tony Hall on bass round out a truly intriguing and original sounding line up.Their set was marked with a variety of remarkable covers mixed in with material from the band’s forthcoming album.  An emotional tribute to the recently deceased Prince, including a emotional “Little Red Corvette” and a jubilant “I Would Die 4 U,” added to the many moving tributes that have been performed all around the city and on the stages of Jazz Fest. With the first day in the books the NOLA Crawfish Festival bolted out of the gate and set a high bar for the days to follow.  Sunny skies and smiling faces were all around as the air was filled with wonderful music and the intoxicating aroma of fresh seafood. Check out some exclusive videos and photos from Day One below, and come by the NOLA Brewery today and tomorrow from 3-10 PM for hours of funky tunes and delicious food!Honey Island Swamp Band:Neville Jacobs “Wasted”:last_img read more

first_imgThere’s no denying that Ramsey Lewis is a jazz legend. At age 81, Lewis has been a vital part of the jazz scene for sixty years, delivering dozens of albums as a composer and pianist. One of his latest works, Taking Another Look, saw Lewis continuing to reinvent his iconic sound.Interestingly enough, the deluxe edition of Taking Another Look features alternate takes on the songs from the album. One of the bands featured on the album was TAUK, the progressive instrumental fusion quartet based out of Long Island. “We are honored to be a part of this new record. Ramsey Lewis is giant in the Jazz community and beyond. It cannot be overstated how much his music has influenced musicians around the world for his entire career, all of us included. His music is meaningful, has soul, and has lasted the test of time. There is no one, and will never be another like him.”TAUK put their unique spin on the composition “Sharing Her Journey,” transforming the jazz classic in true TAUK fashion. Though the deluxe album was released last year, it will make its way into the digital realm this Friday! To get you excited for this new release, we have the honor of premiering TAUK’s take on this Ramsey Lewis track. Listen to the band’s cover of “Sharing Her Journey” in the player below.Don’t miss TAUK performing with The Naughty Professor on November 12th in New Orleans! Phish Serves Up Big Jams, Ballads & Song Debut To Close Charleston Run [Setlist/Review]

March 2, 2021

| igwybhus

first_imgPhish tour is back in full swing! The band returned to the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston, SC last night, playing the second consecutive show at the venue. Night one was highlighted by some serious jamming (“Disease -> Cities” anyone?), not to mention three new Big Boat songs performed live for the very first time – “Petrichor,” “Home,” and “More” – all in the first set. With the stage set after a great opening night, Phish wasted no time getting to work with the bouncy Big Boat jam, “Blaze On.” The selection made for an exciting start to the show, with Trey Anastasio ripping a great peaking guitar solo to set the stage. He would keep up the work with a beautiful “What’s The Use?,” treating fans to a rare standalone version that didn’t segue into another song (the last time that happened was back in 2009). After the instrumental slow-down, Phish built the energy back up with another instrumental: “Martian Monster.” The first Thrilling, Chilling selection of Fall 2016 was an all-out funk jam, with Mike Gordon holding it down on the low end. After a short-but-sweet “Devotion To A Dream,” the band brought out their second Big Boat song of the night in “Waking Up Dead.” Played for only the second time, the complex Gordon/Murawski original saw the band move through various compositional themes and challenge themselves improvisationally. Jon Fishman was particularly noticeable in the song, driving the rhythm forward with a gusto. “Timber (Jerry)” followed, letting the band cut loose with a fun upbeat jam.“Things People Do” came next, delivered as a peppy, bluegrass-style tune. The Page McConnell original was left in demo form on the Big Boat album, as the band said they recorded a few different versions in the studio but felt Page’s original – recorded on an iPhone with just Page and a Wurlitzer organ – was the best. The song made a few appearances through summer 2016, and kept people smiling in its first performance post-Big Boat.“Let Me Lie” followed, the Joy original that was busted out for the first time since 2010 earlier this summer. The slower moment was reprieved as Fishman tapped the opening rhythm for “Maze.” He even used the intro time to sing the lyrics to “Lengthwise,” the song that precedes “Maze” on the 1993 album Rift. “Lengthwise” hadn’t been played since 11/1/14, but it was the following “Maze” that lit flames towards the tail end of the first set. A glorious Fishman-led “Ass Handed” came next, before Phish erupted in “Carini,” played in the first set for only the second time since their 2009 reunion (and first since 2012). The spacey jam ended nicely, before Phish led their fans on a true funk-a-thon “Wolfman’s Brother” to end the first set. After the setbreak, Phish got the second set started on the right foot with “Mercury.” Though the song was ultimately cut from Big Boat due to time constraints (according to Gordo), the song has been a fan favorite since its 2015 debut. Of the five times “Mercury” has been played, this was something of a stand out, as the band stretched their legs after the composed sections for a nice and patient jam. Eventually they dropped into melodic territory and wound into “Twist,” with Trey working in teases of “What’s The Use?” into his melodic playing. As the improvisation was winding down, Fishman kicked into a new driving rhythm beat, which led into the debut of Page’s new song “I Always Wanted It This Way.”The album version of “I Always Wanted It This Way” was very 80’s influenced, and those synthesizer tones carried over nicely into the live setting. Page’s vocals worked well with the song in the live setting, abandoning the album’s vocal filters for a more natural approach. The album version also featured very minimal guitarwork, and Trey stuck to more of a rhythm guitar role for most the performance. From the album, it was evident that this song would be a second set jammer, and Phish certainly lived up to the expectations by flushing it out in Charleston. Trey finally made himself known in the second jam, playing off of Page’s synthesizer arpeggios in style. After the song’s triumphant conclusion, Phish dove into the Big Boat ballad “Miss You.” The heartfelt song dedicated to Trey’s late sister made for an emotional moment, especially highlighted by his guitar melody to end the song. The set then got rolling with the exciting introduction to “Fuego,” which worked its way into a funky jam. Trey then laid down the opening riff of “Sand,” and the rest of Phish followed him into the song. Where “Fuego” felt shorter than expected, “Sand” more than compensated with a grooving cow funk jam out. With several natural climactic points, “Sand” was easily one of the improvisational highlights of the performance.“Joy” came next, providing the set with its second moving ballad. The song’s melodic ending was a nice lead-in for the tension-building introduction to one of Phish’s oldest tunes, “Possum.” Page was in fine form, letting loose with a noteworthy solo mid-song. “Possum” would close the second set, and the band returned with their energetic take on Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” for the encore. It was a triumphant way to end a great Saturday night show.Phish will continue their tour tomorrow night, October 16th, for their first-ever performance in Jacksonville, FL. Check out the full setlist from tonight’s show, below.Setlist: Phish at North Charleston Coliseum, North Charleston, SC – 10/15/16Set One: Blaze On, What’s the Use?, Martian Monster, Devotion To a Dream, Waking Up Dead, Timber (Jerry), Things People Do, Let Me Lie, Maze -> Lengthwise[1] -> Maze, Ass Handed, Carini, Wolfman’s BrotherSet Two: Mercury -> Twist > I Always Wanted It This Way[2] > Miss You, Fuego -> Sand, Joy, Possum,Encore: Good Times, Bad Times[1] Sung by Fish over the Maze intro.[2] Debut. This show featured the debut of I Always Wanted It This Way. Listen To Phish’s Incredible Six-Song Second Set To Close Out Nashville Run [Full Audio]

March 2, 2021

| fofabvlic

first_imgAfter spending the night playing with Bob Weir one night earlier, it seems that Phish was still in a great mood for the final night of their two-night stand at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, TN. The band delivered a solid first set, though it had some up and down moments, but their second set was one that will surely be remembered. The impressive feat saw the band bring out a total of six songs, stretching out each of them with a fluidity so prized among the band’s loyal fans. The set started with a cover of TV On The Radio’s “Golden Age,” leading into a blissful jam that ultimately dropped into fan favorite, “Tweezer.” The funk train kept on going with “No Men In No Man’s Land,” before Phish brought out a dark and intoxicating rendition of the Trey Anastasio original, “Plasma.” Played for only the fourth time ever, let’s keep our fingers crossed that “Plasma” becomes a more-frequent second set choice. The darkness became light as the band played a feel-good “Harry Hood,” and closed out the set with the upbeat “Suzy Greenberg.” With no breaks in the music, this was some straight up Phish, pure and simple.Fortunately, thanks to Chris From Jam Buzz, full audio of the show is now streaming on YouTube for us to enjoy. Sit back and enjoy! You can catch some videos below, as well.Harry HoodWalls Of The Cave > Tweezer Reprise (Encore)[Videos courtesy Go See Live Music]Phish has the night off tonight, October 20th, before starting a two night run this weekend in Alpharetta, GA. Listen To Jimmy Herring & Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe Jam In Atlanta [Full Audio]

March 2, 2021

| qwfjccar

first_imgFor the first four days of December, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe has been touring with The White Wizard himself, Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring. Herring and Denson have collaborated many times in the past, and they recently joined forces in New Orleans earlier this year. With that show going so well, it was only logical for KDTU to recruit Herring for a full run of shows in the Southeast, and the results could not have been better.Jimmy Herring and Karl Denson are seasoned musical veterans, so it’s no surprise that their collaboration would be so well received. Their second to last show together was spent at Terminal West in Atlanta, GA on Saturday night before closing their run in Nashville on Sunday. The group got down on some KDTU originals, as well as hit covers like ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid”, David Bowie’s “Young Americans” and Steely Dan’s “Show Biz Kids.” Fortunately, thanks to taper “barren”, we can listen to a full length stream of the show.Additionally, check out this video of “Just Got Paid” courtesy of YouTube User UnknownVincent:last_img read more

first_imgFather John Misty is a man of simple taste and robust opinion. Known for writing ballads relevant to the present moment, he shares his newest single “Ballad of the Dying Man” from Pure Comedy due out April 7. The new song explores the human relationship with social media, and how we are brought down by our obsessive tendencies. “Eventually the dying man takes his dying breath/ But first checks his news feed to see what he’s ’bout to miss,” he sings. The lyrics read: “So says the dying man, ‘Once I’m in the box, just think of all the overrated hacks running amok/ All the pretentious, ignorant voices that will go unchecked/ The homophobes, hipsters and one-percent.’” Listen to the new track below:Listen to “Two Wildly Different Perspectives” from earlier this week:last_img read more

Vulfpeck Premieres “Cory Wong” Music Video From “The Beautiful Game”

March 2, 2021

| owdfgqre

first_imgCory Wong is the jedi-master secret weapon of Vulfpeck, plays on 70% of The Beautiful Game, and is referred to as “the album’s Billy Preston.” Vulf-fans might recognize his name from the final track of the 2016 album, or perhaps from some of his appearances with the band in Internet land. Wong’s style blends in perfectly with the originality of the Ann Arbor-bred phenomenons. He’s the subtle hero who can take a guitar part and turn it into his own magical Vulf-y thing.Longtime fans of Vulfpeck are already hip to the name, as Wong made his debut collaboration back in 2013 in their YouTube video “TOUR VLOG 002” when the band had the night off in Tulsa and got funky with the strat-o-master. The jam has since evolved into “Cory Wong,” a song that snuck into Vulfpeck’s live repertoire over the summer and is featured as the final track on The Beautiful Game. Watch the first-ever “Cory Wong” below:Today, Vulfpeck releases the official video of the 2016 album’s recording of “Cory Wong,” complete with Vulfy commentary, original studio videography, and live footage from the Teragram Ballroom performance on June 23, 2016. Released four years after the song’s totally random conception, it’s songs like this that make Vulfpeck so special.Read more about Cory Wong and his work with Vulfpeck in this interview.last_img read more
