Gloria Shillingford.The government of Dominica has commenced the process towards ratifying the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.Minister with responsibility for Community Development Gloria Shillingford made that disclosure last week noting that the government has heeded the calls by the Dominica Association of Persons Living with Disabilities to have it ratified.Shillingford says while the government will soon ratify the convention, several steps must be taken in that regard.“Dominica has signed the convention in 2007 but efforts are being made in partnership with the DAPD and other civic groups to ratify the convention but it includes a number of steps. Ratification involves a number of steps, the fact that Dominica signed the convention is a clear indication that ratification will follow,” she explained. According to Shillingford, says the implementation on the provisions of the convention is dependable on the entire society. She said ratification will improve several aspects of the lives of persons living with disabilities.
