Notre Dame, ghost breeding ground

January 26, 2021

first_imgGhost stories, narratives of university legends roaming campus with unfinished business and student-spun tall tales all add mystique to university campuses across the United States. Matthew Swayne, author of the new book “America’s Haunted Universities: Ghosts that Roam Hallowed Halls,” became intrigued by such stories while researching a Halloween-themed newspaper piece. “The actual idea took shape … trying to find some material for a Halloween issue, I found some stories about a nearby university, Penn State,” he said. “I was born on Halloween, so I suppose that has something to do with [writing the book].” Swayne said he was struck by the number of eerie stories he dug up while researching what would become his book, especially because people usually think of universities as havens of science and reason, not the supernatural. “Why are there so many ghost stories on campus? It fascinated me so much that I started collecting stories from other universities,” he said. “I also read a lot about the folklore and what role that plays into the creation and spread of ghost stories.” The University of Notre Dame and its host of ghost stories caught Swayne’s attention. “I visited the Notre Dame campus a few years ago and it just had that historic, spiritual aura that I knew was going to make fertile ground for haunted tales,” he said. Swayne said campus is very active in terms of folklore and myth but also in a supernatural sense, according to some students he met during his visits to Notre Dame. “There are some wild tales, spirits of Native Americans roaming around looking for their burial grounds,” he said. “There are ghost horses – a bit unusual for college campuses.” Two of Notre Dame’s most famous ghosts, “The Gipper” and University founder Fr. Edward Sorin, play central roles in both fact and legend as well as in the supernatural history of campus, Swayne said. “If I were taking a ghost tour on campus, I would want to see Washington Hall where George “The Gipper” Gipp has reportedly been seen … I’d also check out Main Building where Fr. Sorin is said to hang out,” he said. “On the creepier side, a few students have reported their interaction with the spirit world … a couple accounts of anomalous activity, like being pushed by an unseen hand or hearing odd sounds or voices when they were alone.” Swayne said he believes Notre Dame’s strong Catholic identity also contributes to the traditions of campus mythology. “One thing I found is that universities with an extremely rich history and a well-developed sense of culture have a rich supernatural legacy,” he said. “I also wonder whether the heightened sense of spirituality at Notre Dame doesn’t play a role in the University’s ghost lore.” While some students might find haunted tales at their college disconcerting, Swayne said such supernatural legends set schools apart from the rest. “Overall it adds to what I call the aura of a school,” he said. “Only great schools have ghosts.”last_img read more

Professor studies sociality in baboons

first_imgA new study has found that social interactions are not just important for humans, but for baboons as well.Elizabeth Archie, Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Science, conducts a massive study on hundreds of wild female baboons, analyzing the animals’ social group activities. The project is run in conjunction with a team of scientists from some of the country’s most prestigious universities, including Duke University and Princeton University, according to a University press release. The project, founded in 1971 by Archie’s collaborator Jeanne Altmann, takes place in southern Kenya in the Amboseli National Park.“[The park] is a grassy savannah dotted with a few trees, with lots of other wildlife,” Archie said.According to a University press release, the team uses a vast array of data, dating back to 1984, regarding the social relationships of wild female baboons.Archie lives on site for about two months of the year.“I love visiting the baboons because it’s like checking in on the latest episode of my favorite TV drama,” Archie said. “I get to find out who died, who had a baby, or who rose or fell in social rank.“I’ve always been interested in animal social relationships and how social interactions in animals compare to those in humans.”The team attempts to analyze how groups of wild female baboons successfully solve a variety of daily tasks.“Animals have to solve a series of problems in their lives, including finding food, escaping from predators and mating,” Archie said. “Animals utilize social relationships to help them solve these problems.”Archie’s current research aims to correlate a relationship between social interactions and extended life spans.According to a University press release, Archie’s analysis of the data set has found female and male baboons both lived longer when they had strong social connections.“These results suggest that social effects on life span are not unique to humans,” Archie said.Archie’s team’s findings also relate to other social mammals, such as rats and dolphins.“There have been a handful of studies that have shown that an animal’s social connections can predict their longevity,” she said. “Our results help confirm this phenomenon in mammals and suggest it might be widely shared across several social species.”Archie’s team hopes to extend their research into male baboons, but this is a surprisingly difficult process.“Female baboons live in the same social group for their whole lives, so when they disappear from the group, we can be pretty certain that they died,” Archie said.Archie also said that males do not demonstrate the same pack mentality, and thus it is more difficult to keep track of them. With such groundbreaking research, Archie hopes that her team’s results will be applicable to future human social research.Tags: Baboons, researchlast_img read more

first_imgChamplain College is launching its Computer and Digital Forensics program on the Internet this fall. The program prepares professionals to examine computers and pull relevant evidence from them, and it is the first online degree of its kind in the country.Computers represent the fastest growing technology used by criminals for literally all types of crimes, and the numbers of computer and network security incidents are increasing, said program director Gary Kessler, a nationally recognized computer security expert. The professional computer forensics examiner needs to understand the law, the technology and the investigative process.Today, computers often play a key role in the commission of crimes, as in financial fraud and identity theft, while at other times they serve as record-keepers of conversations and incriminating data.Online students can earn a professional certificate, associates degree or bachelors degree in this discipline without setting foot on the Champlain campus, and accelerated courses are also available. Interested individuals may visit www.champlain.edu/coce/(link is external) or call (877) 772-CCOL. The Computer and Digital Forensics program has been offered on campus since Fall 2003.Founded in 1878, Champlain College first offered online courses in 1993 and now offers 10 full degree programs via the Internet.last_img read more

Grow your slice of the digital pie

December 17, 2020

| wwrdmdxu

first_imgDigital has magnified the marketer’s playground, providing both new tools and new channels for reaching audiences. Despite the innovation, there remains a constant: Marketing abhors a vacuum. “The truth is, if you’re not occupying at least some of the space in your market, it’s guaranteed someone else will,” says Terrill Herbig, president of The BA Group, a credit union marketing firm based in Northfield, Minnesota. “Big banks, community banks and fintechs all are occupying the space of current and potential members, and the competition is only going to get stiffer.”Currently, the financial services sector accounts for 12% of digital ad spending, or around $15.65 billion, according to a 2019 report by eMarketer. “This investment makes it critical for credit unions to find their digital focus, one that not only embraces their brand but helps to define and support overarching goals and communicate relevant messages with target audiences,” says Herbig. “Without a share of the digital pie, it’s difficult for credit unions to elevate their brand, let alone give back to members.”Achieving digital focus will also help a credit union to sharpen its goals and service objectives. These can vary by credit union and segment—for example, brand affinity, product adoption or enhanced relationships. But it requires understanding the tools available and differentiating between the strategic and tactical processes, stresses Herbig. “Strategic activities will define your goals over time as well as the key, measurable objectives to achieve them. Tactical actions, however, are task-related and will provide guidelines on how to best use specific channels and resources, based on their respective strengths. continue reading » ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

Nigeria security forces kill 18 over virus lockdown: Rights body

October 19, 2020
| wwrdmdxu

first_imgSecurity forces, including police and army, have been deployed to enforce the restrictions, sparking deadly confrontations in some states. In a report released late on Wednesday, the National Human Rights Commission said it had received and documented “105 complaints of incidents of human rights violations perpetuated by security forces” in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states and Abuja.Of these complaints, “there were 8 documented incidents of extrajudicial killings leading to 18 deaths”, it said. The commission noted that the tally of killings was higher than the recorded toll from the disease itself.  “Whereas COVID-19 led to the death of 11 victims, law enforcement agents extrajudicially executed 18 persons in the cause of the enforcement regulations,” it said, referring to the official virus toll at the time of the report. It accused the security agents of “excessive or disproportionate use of force, abuse of power, corruption and non-adherence to national and international laws, best practices and rules of engagement.”National police spokesman Frank Mba said the commission was “too general in its allegations,” saying it ought to have been specific in the number of people killed by the police.”The commission should have given details of those killed by the police, their number, names and places where they were killed to enable us take appropriate actions,” he told AFP.Mba insisted the police would continue to enforce the lockdown measures “professionally and in line with international best practices.”He said the police authorities would not condone any abuses or infractions, adding that recently an officer who extorted money from a civilian was punished and made to refund it.Local and international rights bodies have long accused Nigerian security forces of abuses against civilians, but they typically deny the charges.Segun Awosanya, who heads influential civil group, Social Intervention Advocacy Foundation, said his organisation had also documented 18 deaths nationwide. “It could be more. Those are only the ones we know of,” Awosanya said. He said that on Wednesday two people were killed in the state of Anambra and a truck driver was killed in Abia state after apparently refusing to give a bribe to security officials. “There’s been so many complaints since the beginning of the lockdown, every evening we get alerted on many people being detained. It’s very tense everywhere,” he said. “The police and the security agencies are not even safe themselves. They have no safety equipment to protect themselves against the virus, no logistics to defend themselves against rampant crime, and they see citizens in a way to extort money.”There have been growing fears of a rise in crime and unrest due to the virus restrictions, especially in Lagos, as millions of people living in poverty have been cut off from vital income. Reports have also emerged from other African countries of abuses by security forces as the authorities apply restrictive measures to try to halt the pandemic. South African police have opened several probes into the deaths of citizens allegedly killed by security patrols for defying a lockdown. Topics : Nigerian security forces have killed 18 people in their enforcement of measures to curb coronavirus, a figure higher than the documented toll inflicted by the disease, the country’s human rights body said.Africa’s most populous nation has imposed a total lockdown in megacity Lagos and the capital Abuja and set restrictions in other regions in a bid to contain the virus.According to official figures, coronavirus has so far infected 407 people in Nigeria, 12 of them fatally.last_img read more

In Bedford and Pittsburgh, Governor Wolf Continues Local Roundtables to Address Pennsylvania’s Opioid Epidemic

October 17, 2020

first_img Press Release,  Substance Use Disorder Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf was joined by Sen. John Wozniak, Rep. Jesse Topper, Sen. Jay Costa, and Rep. Ed Gainey, as well as local officials, law enforcement, and health care professionals, at two roundtables today to discuss local and statewide efforts to lead the nation in combating the opioid abuse and heroin use epidemic in Pennsylvania. In an effort to confront this epidemic collaboratively, Governor Wolf is conducting roundtables statewide to discuss the initiatives of his administration, the state legislature, county agencies, treatment centers, hospitals, and medical schools. The Wolf Administration is eager to engage in these local conversations in order to listen to local officials about the challenges that they are facing.“Fighting Pennsylvania’s opioid and heroin epidemic is a top priority for my administration,” said Governor Wolf. “These roundtables are an opportunity to work collaboratively with the General Assembly and community leaders to ensure Pennsylvania leads the nation in the fight to combat the opioid abuse and heroin use crisis.”Governor Wolf was joined by a number of other state and local leaders at events in Bedford and Pittsburgh. The governor lauded the efforts of Sen. John Wozniak and Rep. Jesse Topper at a roundtable at the Bedford County Library this morning. In the afternoon, the governor touted the work of Sen. Jay Costa and Rep. Ed Gainey at the Homewood location of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.“One of the ways that we can continue to fight this epidemic is to strengthen our families and our communities,” said Representative Topper. “We need to be vigilant in determining the root causes for drug addiction. This truly is a bipartisan effort and I thank the Governor for his interest and leadership on this issue.”“The growing opioid crisis is crippling our communities,” Senator Costa said. “Apart from the devastating human toll on addicts and their families, there is a correlating financial consequence on state and local health agencies, prisons, and service delivery systems that we need to address. These conversations are critically important and will help us change and save lives.”“I’m thrilled to join the governor today to discuss this important issue, one that is near and dear to me as chair of the bipartisan drug caucus HOPE, which stands for ‘Heroin Opiates Prevention and Education,’” said Representative Gainey. “Our mission at HOPE will be rehabilitation, education, and stopping the incarceration of people who are drug addicted. I am excited to bring the voice of HOPE to this roundtable today.”The Wolf Administration hopes that these discussions are just the beginning of a larger conversation with both Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate as well as local officials, law enforcement, emergency responders, and health care professionals.“I look forward to continue working collaboratively with the General Assembly and community leaders to ensure Pennsylvania leads the nation in the fight to combat the opioid abuse and heroin use epidemic,” said Governor Wolf. “The magnitude of the addiction and overdose death epidemic in Pennsylvania is shocking: at least seven Pennsylvanians die every day from a drug overdose. With nearly 2,500 overdose deaths in Pennsylvania in 2014 and estimates that the 2015 total will be higher, a collaborative effort on the federal, state, and local levels is crucial in combating this crisis.”Some of the administration’s initiatives in the fight against heroin include: signing a statewide standing order for naloxone, making it possible for all Pennsylvanians to access this life-saving drug; equipping the Pennsylvania State Police with naloxone so that those troopers who are first on the scene of an overdose can have another tool on-hand during these emergencies; partnering with Adapt Pharma to make Narcan available to public high schools across the state at no cost; developing the ABC-MAP prescription drug monitoring program to detect and prevent prescription fraud and abuse, which contribute to addiction; and appointing a director for the state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) Office, who will work to ensure that the PDMP meets its goal of assisting healthcare professionals in identifying patients that would benefit from treatment. In an effort to curtail drug addiction and curb the supply of excess drugs that can be used illicitly, the Department of Health is leading an effort to build upon the opioid prescribing guidelines already created, including specialty specific guidelines for emergency department providers, dentists, obstetricians and gynecologists, and pharmacists. These guidelines give healthcare providers direction for safe and effective pain relief practices, with greater emphasis on non-opioid therapies and greater caution to prevent addiction and diversion. In addition, the DOH recently joined dozens of healthcare organizations, medical experts, and consumer advocacy groups in signing petitions requesting changes to federal pain management requirements that are believed to foster dangerous prescribing practices. The Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs is developing the “warm hand-off” process “warm hand-off” process, whereby overdose survivors would be taken directly from the emergency department to a licensed drug treatment provider, as well as Pennsylvania’s Prescription Drug Take-Back Program. This program helps communities properly dispose of unused prescriptions at any of the 400+ police station locations across Pennsylvania. To date, approximately 40,000 pounds of prescription drugs have been taken back and destroyed.Governor Wolf’s decision to expand Medicaid eligibility in Pennsylvania under the Affordable Care Act has greatly increased access to treatment services for hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians. Finally, Governor Wolf’s proposed 2016-17 budget provides more than $34 million to treat more than 11,250 new individuals with substance use disorder. The Department of Human Services will provide 25 new Opioid Use Disorder Centers of Excellence for individuals with substance use disorder, providing medication-assisted treatment and appropriate wraparound services, such as cognitive-based therapies. After this first phase of implementation, there will be a push for 25 more facilities that would have the capacity to treat 22,500 individuals total.Like Governor Tom Wolf on Facebook: Facebook.com/GovernorWolf In Bedford and Pittsburgh, Governor Wolf Continues Local Roundtables to Address Pennsylvania’s Opioid Epidemic May 05, 2016center_img SHARE Email Facebook Twitterlast_img read more

US Discussing Oil & Gas-Like OCS Leasing Programme for Offshore Renewables

September 28, 2020

first_imgOn 26 June, the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Natural Resources will hold a legislative hearing on a bill that would amend the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to provide for a leasing programme for offshore renewable energy. If enacted, the bill would set up a National Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Renewable Energy Leasing Program, alongside the country’s existing National Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Oil and Gas Leasing Program, which would bring certainty to offshore wind developers and other stakeholders.“The Secretary shall prepare, periodically revise, and maintain a leasing program for the production of energy from sources other than oil and gas, and for supporting such production and the transportation or transmission of such energy,” one of the amendments to the OCS Lands Act reads. The bill requires the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) to publish a regular leasing schedule and establishes a four-year leasing programme that schedules offshore wind lease sales, detailing the size, timing, and location of leasing activity. The National OCS Renewable Energy Leasing Program Act would also require DOI and the Department of Defence (DOD) to update the Memorandum of Agreement between the two authorities that governs their operations relationship on the OCS to include leases, easements, and rights-of-way pertaining to offshore wind leases.Currently, there is no scheduled process for holding wind leases on the OCS. The process begins with potential developers identifying parcels that may technically and economically support an offshore wind farm. Then, DOI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), coordinates with taskforces in affected States, and begins establishing parameters of the lease, the hearing memo for the bill explains. At this time, the process takes an estimated four years to execute a lease sale, and about seven years after the sale to begin construction. The environmental review requirements are completed after the lease is executed, adding uncertainty regarding milestone completions and presenting considerable legal exposure to the leaseholders, according to the bill memo.last_img read more
