first_imgOlympians Arthur Wint, Herb McKenley and Dennis Johnson, as well stand-out coach Michael Clarke, will be among six luminaries to be honoured at the inaugural staging of the McKenley/Wint Track and Field Classic that will christen the new synthetic track at Calabar High School on January 23.Calabar High benefactors Ray Goldbourne and Dr. Don Philbert, who have both made significant contributions to the continued development of the Red Hills Road-based educational institution, will also be honoured during the meet that will feature Olympic Development races in the 400 and 800 metres and special 100-metre race for primary school athletes.Wint won Jamaica’s first ever gold medal in the 400 metres at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, England. He was also a member of Jamaica’s mile relay team that won gold in world record time at the 1952 Games in Helsinki.McKenley, the first Jamaican schoolboy to win a track scholarship, was a silver medallist in the 400m in 1948 and was a also member of Jamaica’s mile relay team that dramatically defeated the previously invincible Americans at the 1952 Games. He was also a successful track coach at Calabar High for more than a decade.Johnson, the first ever director of sports at the College of Arts, Science and Technology, was among the fastest men in the world over the 100-yard dash between the mid 1950s and early 1960s. He once equalled the world record four times within a one month span.Clarke has had tremendous success as a track coach and has led Calabar High to the last four titles at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships. All six gentlemen will be honoured during the opening ceremony at the meet. “We will be presenting citations for each of them and will be handing over plaques of those citations,” said Andrea Hardware, a member of the organising committee.”We wanted this meet to be a development meet because both Mr. McKenley and Dr. Wint had been significant contributors to track and field, especially at the junior level, moreso Herb because he has been our coach for like the last 100 years before he retired, he was just there with us pushing and developing our programme in general and producing some outstanding athletes for us and for Jamaica.”So it is a meet honouring these two greats that have contributed so much to us as a nation,” Hardware stated.last_img read more

Climate Change as a Philosophy of Science Case Study

December 19, 2019

| owdfgqre

first_img(Visited 99 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 Climate change (what used to be called Global Warming) provides a test case on whether a scientific consensus is reliable or authoritative.A minority of scientists, most being strict Darwinians, rule a majority of their fellow human beings who believe in creation.  A similar situation exists in “climate change” theory, where the scientific elite are frustrated that ordinary citizens and governments balk at accepting their opinions.  Though off topic for Creation-Evolution Headlines, some comparisons may be instructive on how to evaluate the consensus about Darwinism. The more inclusive “climate change” term evolved by punctuated equilibrium (or, as some might have it, by intelligent design) after years of warnings by scientists about “global warming.”  But global warming carries no political baggage unless it is human caused – the source of most of the conflict about “anthropogenic global warming” and what should be done about it.The scientific consensus is still adamant that humans are guilty of setting our planet on a dangerous course via industrial emissions of greenhouse gases. In recent years, their force of presumptive authority led to global summits and promises by governments to take draconian measures as penance.  Some still do.  The wind seems to have gone out of the scientific sails recently, though.  Reasons include lingering damage from embarrassing exposures of fraud and flawed statistics, inconsistent claims, growing doubt about the validity of the data, governments that are figuring that cutting their own emissions puts them at an economic disadvantage, and a public reluctant to accept the “sky is falling” message.“Climate change” has become something of a catch-phrase that stands for too much and thereby means too little. For instance, just when the layman has learned to watch his carbon footprint, New Scientist tells him to watch out for his nitrogen footprint, water footprint and phosphorus footprint.  How can John Q. Public avoid stepping all over himself? In addition, some of the warnings and advice appear downright nutty.  National Geographic, for instance, seriously reported a proposal to put sunscreen in the sky.  The environmental impact of pumping many tons of titanium oxide into the atmosphere has not been evaluated, for sure.  What will happen to the coral and endangered species, including humans?  Even if deemed safe, application could be decades away (too little too late), whether or not the EPA decides what SPF factor Mother Earth needs to put on.A number of reports about past climate change undermines today’s doomsday prophets.  “Climate change led to collapse of ancient Indus civilization” reported Science Daily this week.  Clearly, whatever climate catastrophe might be correlated with their demise was not anthropogenic so long before the Industrial Revolution.  Sometimes the response of scientists is to warn that today’s threat is greater than any historical climate change.  Many onlookers find that unconvincing.  If ice ages and warming periods happened before, don’t blame us, they think.Another sign of the changing political climate appeared on Science Daily this week: “Public Apathy Over Climate Change Unrelated to Science Literacy.”  This implies that skeptics of anthropogenic warming are not stupider than climate scientists who promote the consensus view.  The skeptics may have different cultural values, but are just as able to comprehend the science, according to a study just published in Nature Climate Change.  The article tried to divert attention to matters of public bias or the persuasive abilities of scientists, but the results must have been discomfiting to the journal editors and to the National Science Foundation that funded the survey.Whether the consensus is correct regarding global warming or not, it’s an issue with parallels to the evolution controversy: a scientific consensus bucking heads with a recalcitrant public.  It shows that science is not “out there” as some ideal entity, but is necessarily a human enterprise.  Elitists or not, scientists have to get down and dirty in rhetoric, politics, and reputation in messy relationships with their fellow human beings who don’t always buy into their right to tell them what to do.It doesn’t help science’s reputation when commentators like Daniel Sarewitz write in prestigious journals like Nature on May 9, “Beware the creeping cracks of bias: Evidence is mounting that research is riddled with systematic errors. Left unchecked, this could erode public trust,” the article began.  Though the context was different (medical research), the principle is the same.  Arguably, a problem of bias in medical research, something more accessible and short-term than climate change, could erode public trust even more with talking about longer-term theories like global warming or evolution.Like the Darwinians, the climate-change people own the media, the schools and the U.N.  The Darwinians had better be shaking in their boots about the possible collapse of global warming theory.  Even though a collapse by itself would not justify the climate skeptics – it could be discounted as a rhetorical loss by the “right” side – it would demonstrate that scientists cannot pretend to be a global oligarchy. The real issue relates to philosophy of science: how do scientists know what they know?  If the consensus collapses from within, if a new consensus emerges that discards the old one, say, and warns that humans are causing a new ice age or whatever,  it will demonstrate Kuhn was right.  By parallel evolution, Darwinism will be relegated to a currently powerful paradigm that may some day give way to a new paradigm based on intelligent design.Darwinians are in a Catch-22 situation.  They cannot simultaneously preach scientism (“science is the path to Truth”) and argue that evolution produced the human mind.  If it’s Truth they want – a Truth that can allow a minority to persuade and direct a majority – they can’t posture themselves as argumentative apes (see previous entry). An embarrassment about climate change will only illustrate their fallibility.  What are the Darwinians going to say if their critics mock them, saying, according to their own assumptions, evolution caused their demise?  It’s just survival of the fittest. Q.E.D.  Stuff happens.  The climates, they are a-changing.  That’s what you get for founding a belief system on chance and contingency.last_img read more

SA creates more jobs, better jobs

December 19, 2019

| fofabvlic

first_img27 September 2007South Africa gained almost 200 000 jobs in the year to March 2007, according to Statistics SA’s latest labour force survey, as the recovery in job creation that started in 2003, and the shift to formal sector employment that began in 2001, both continued. The survey, released on Wednesday, shows that the number of employed South Africans rose from 12 451 000 in March 2006 to 12 648 000 in March 2007, pushing the percentage of working-age South Africans with jobs up slightly, from 41.7% to 41.9%.While South Africa’s official unemployment rate remained virtually unchanged at 25.5%, compared with 25.6% in March 2006, this was due to the increase in the number of people in the market for jobs. South Africa’s working age population (15- to 65-year-olds) rose from 29.8-million in March 2006 to almost 30.2-million in March 2007.The trade industry (including the wholesale and retail sectors) remained South Africa’s biggest employer, accounting for 23.4% of total employment in March 2007, followed by the community and personal services industry (18.3%) and manufacturing (13.9%).The industries with the biggest employment gains in the year to March 2007 were community and personal services, including domestic, shop and sales workers (127 000 new jobs), finance (126 000 new jobs), and construction (102 000 new jobs).More formal sector jobsT-Sec economist Mike Schussler told Business Report that South Africa’s overall employment picture was positive, with Statistics SA’s latest figures showing not only that jobs were increasing, but that workers were moving from the informal to the formal sector and that earnings were up sharply.According to the labour force survey, formal sector employment – where workers are more likely to have a constant salary and a pension or provident fund – has been rising steadily since 2001.In the year to March 2007, 364 000 jobs were created in the formal sector (excluding agriculture), while in the informal sector there was a decline of 59 000 jobs.In March 2007, formal sector jobs accounted for 66.6% of South Africa’s total employment, whereas the informal sector (also excluding agriculture) accounted for 16.9% and domestic work for 7.4% of all jobs.SAinfo reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

More to South Africa than Nelson Mandela

It is hoped that this strategy will help to facilitate business partnerships and investment with entities from the UAE and other Gulf states. At a dinner to welcome the group to South Africa, Brand South Africa CEO Miller Matola said that South Africa has a lot to offer, and there is great potential for business between the country and the UAE.“South Africa is at the centre of major shifts in the globe,” Matola said. “The country is a serious and relevant socio economic and political player globally.”Agro processing, energy, skills and technology have been identified as some of the major sectors where South Africa and UAE could form partnerships.“We believe there is more scope for investment and to work together,” said Matola.More than Nelson Mandela“I am looking for a reason to visit South Africa that is more than Nelson Mandela,” said Syrian journalist Bahaa Alawam, reporting for Sharjah-based Al Khaleej, the UAE’s top Arabic daily and one that is read by influential people such as government officials and decision-makers in business. He explained that his first thought about South Africa was of its former president and Nobel Peace laureate, now 93 years old and long retired from public life.“Then I did some more reading about your history, politics, economy and languages,” said Alawam, “and I realised that Nelson Mandela was not fighting alone for freedom, but that there were many people in the revolution.”He said that he didn’t know this until just before his trip, but was now keen to know more about the various reasons people visit South Africa. The country’s strong points for leisure tourists are its magnificent wildlife, spectacular landscapes, fascinating heritage, general friendliness of its citizens, and proven ability to host major international events such as the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the COP17 climate change summit, and many others.Gulf News reporter Mahmood Saberi said he worked with a number of South Africans who primed him for his tour to the country.“They all raved about South Africa and made me really look forward to coming here.”For the group of five, it was their first visit to South Africa and each of them showed a keen interest in the country and its history, and said they were excited to be here.A quick tour of historyHowever, the tour started off on a very Mandela-centric note, with a visit to Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia north of Johannesburg. This heritage site was previously an African National Congress hideout and the place where Mandela, posing as a gardener, eluded the authorities until a raid in 1963 and subsequent arrests led to the infamous Rivonia Treason Trial.Afterwards the journalists headed for Soweto and the historic Mandela House, where they were treated to a brief summary of Mandela’s life after he arrived in Johannesburg in the 1940s.They were guided around the little house, built in 1945, where Mandela and his family lived amid unrest and fear in the township. Mandela went underground in 1961 but the rest of the family stayed on until they too were sent away. After Mandela’s release the family moved back into number 8115 Vilakazi Street, Orlando West. The historic suburb of Fordsburg was next on the itinerary. This area of downtown Johannesburg was originally set up for workers on the nearby gold mines but eventually came to house Johannesburg’s Indian and Muslim communities, as well as coloured, Chinese and Jewish people. This gave the suburb the multicultural sparkle for which it’s known today. One of Fordsburg’s well-known spots is the Delhi Palace, where up-and-coming lawyers Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo ate in the 1950s.The Fordsburg community eventually fell victim to forced removals in the 1970s, when many Indian families were transferred to Lenasia, about 30km away. The journalists rounded off their first day’s sightseeing with a visit to the Constitutional Court, where the doors are never locked and the public may freely enter the courtroom, even while it’s in session.Standing around the ever-burning flame of democracy, the group learned more about the history of the site. For much of its life it was a military outpost and prison, known as the Old Fort prison complex, a notorious institution where political prisoners and common criminals, both men and women, were held under the harshest of conditions. It became the site of the Constitutional Court in the 1990s, and today is as much a historical monument as it is a vital part of South Africa’s legislative system. The Constitution, which turns 15 in 2012, is viewed as South Africa’s supreme law.last_img read more
