Saint Michael’s raises $33,574 for the crisis in Haiti
Challenged as to how to respond to the horrific crisis in Haiti, the Saint Michael’s College community came together with a large outpouring of generosity from all quarters in rapid time. Prevented from travelling to Haiti, as many wished to do, instead students, faculty and staff put programs in place to raise funds and collected $33,574 for medical and humanitarian relief in about 10 days.Saint Michael s Haitian connectionsMany Saint Michael s connections with Haiti intensified these drives. Three SMC faculty members are Haitian and have extended family and many friends on the Caribbean island. Sixteen Haitians studied English at Saint Michael s from August 23 to October16, 2009. And a Haitian author who had once been an SMC Distinguished Visiting Scholar and his wife both lost their lives in the earthquake.Saint Michael s has held a week-long Haitian Cultural Festival during many spring semesters since 1994 when then-Haitian President Jean-Bertrande Aristide was the featured key-note speaker at the festival.Source of the giftsSaint Michael s financial response included an immediate challenge gift of $10,000 announced three days after the January 12th earthquake, by the priests of the Society of St. Edmund. Inspired by that generosity, students, faculty and staff, and worshippers attending Mass at Saint Michael s, responded with gifts totaling $13,364. Additionally, a Brahms Requiem benefit concert, at Saint Michael s on January 23rd raised another $10,210, bringing the total Saint Michael s gift, as of January 27, to $33,574.The gift was delivered on January 27 to Catholic Relief Services, $28,499, and to Partners in Health, $5,075.Spearheaded in large part by the Rev. Brian Cummings, SSE, the fund drive started with the priests challenge gift, followed by an interfaith prayer service and a movement amongst student groups. Students set up awareness tables and donation jars around campus. Then the local music community, inspired by soprano Shyla Nelson, came together with over 200 area musicians for a fundraising concert.Once-in-a-lifetime, musical/spiritual event in VermontFull chorus, full orchestra, soloists, The Green Mountain Mahler Festival, Live from the Core, and Bread & Puppet Theater, enacting the theme of death, resurrection and hope, all came together to perform Brahms Requiem in the awe-inspiring and acoustically superb Saint Michael’s College Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel. It was an astonishing event that is never likely to be repeated in Vermont. The two-hour performance by professional musicians, playing and singing for a cause, was breath-taking. Many in the 700-person audience were in tears at the end.Peter Schumann, founder and director of the Bread & Puppet Theater, performed and led his troupe, who created their full-puppet spiritual interpretation of Haiti s catastrophe and Brahms Requiem within a week s time.The college community is very anxious to continue to find ways to support our brothers and sisters in Haiti, and is in continuing conversation about the possibility of carrying out educational programs, as guided by Haitian educators, in the years to come.Learn What Matters at Saint Michael s College, The Edmundite Catholic liberal arts college, www.smcvt.edu(link is external). THE long-awaited appointment of a General Secretary (GS) for the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has been finally made following extensive interviews last October for the position that became vacant after Diedri Davis was dismissed in June of last year.In a Press release to the Media from the GFF early yesterday morning, it was disclosed that former Assistant Superintendent of Police Althea Scipio has taken up the post since January 1.The newly appointed GS who served in the Guyana Police Force for eight years was also the Honorary Secretary of the Georgetown FA for just over a year.The release added that Scipio during her tenure in the Police Force ‘honed her management and man management skills while performing various functions in the Police Force, including forensics, community relations, media relations, security management and secretariat management’.‘Ms Scipio will now play a pivotal role in the ongoing restructuring process of the GFF’s Secretariat, which has been embarked on by the Executive Committee, and, ultimately, the football fraternity as a whole. She will have the critical task of spearheading the successful and timely implementation of the Committee’s vision’, the release concluded.Prior to the appointment of the new GS there were two acting GSs in former assistant GS, Merson Jones who later resigned and was succeeded by Trevor King.In her brief comments, the new head of the GFF’s Secretariat told Chronicle Sport: “I am delighted to be part of the Guyana Football Federation and look forward to aiding the restructuring process that has been initiated. I expect challenges but am duly prepared for them.”
Facebook Twitter Google+ 15 hours after falling to RIT at Tennity Ice Pavilion, Syracuse arose to an early wake-up call for their noon road game ninety miles away in Rochester for the second installation of their home-and-home.Syracuse (2-10-0, 1-1-0 College Hockey America) shutout RIT (3-6-1, 1-3-0) to seal the win, 3-0. The Orange, backstopped by senior netminder Ady Cohen, blanked the Tigers to take their first CHA win of the season.Like Friday, there was a big shot disparity between the two sides. The Orange put up 45 shots, while the Tigers could only put 12 on Cohen through 60 minutes. SU had more shots in the first period alone than RIT had all game. The first Syracuse goal came off an RIT slashing penalty. Mae Batherson found the rebound off the right pad of Tigers goalie Jessi O’Leary and put the puck into the wide-open net. Six minutes later, senior forward Kelli Rowswell took the pass from Emma Polaski to the left slot and threaded a perfectly-placed shot right under the glove of O’Leary to make it 2-0. Forward Emma Polaski later added a goal of her own to the mix, an empty netter with four minutes left in the third to clinch the game for the Orange. Syracuse played a much more fundamentally sound game than their last loss. Shot quality greatly improved, and the Orange were rotating the puck much more efficiently.
