New Delhi: If the rural and urban divide among voters is any indicator of poll outcome, the cities in Uttar Pradesh are the main culprits in bringing the voters turnout down in the state. Uttar Pradesh saw 59.52 per cent turnout, way below the record national average of 67.10. A breakdown of the state’s 80 seats show that voters apathy was evidence in all the major cities of the state while rural areas witnessed brisk polling. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California will let college athletes hire agents and make money from endorsements, defying the NCAA and setting up a likely legal challenge that could reshape U.S. amateur sports.Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday he has signed a law that allowing athletes at California universities make money from their images, names or likenesses. The law also bans schools from kicking athletes off the team if they get paid.California is the first state to pass such a law.The law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2023. It does not apply to community colleges and bans athletes from accepting endorsement deals conflicting with their schools’ existing contracts. The NCAA Board of Governors had asked Newsom to veto the bill, saying it “would erase the critical distinction between college and professional athletes.”The Associated Press read more

So there is really no need for any industrial action.” Staff at the UK’s 300 largest Post Offices – which handle 20 per cent of all post – have announced a five-day strike which will last until Christmas EveCredit:PA The PPU was launched three years ago, breaking away from the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa), and claims to represent 70 per cent of Virgin’s 900 pilots. It wants to be the only union Virgin deals with, and for Balpa to be de-recognised.The PPU is formed entirely of Virgin Atlantic pilots and is not affiliated to the TUC. Unite national officer Oliver Richardson said: “We appreciate that this is a very busy time of year at the UK’s airports and that’s why we are calling for the company to engage in constructive talks under the auspices of Acas to resolve this dispute. Unite’s door is open 24/7 for such talks.”Our members are only taking this industrial action as a last resort in a bid to reach a fair settlement our members have not had a pay rise since 2014.” Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic pilots will take action short of a strike in a row over union recognition, and will work “strictly to contract” from December 23.Their union, the PPU, said 88 per cent of its members voted in favour on a turnout of 80 per cent. The action will see a removal of “pilot goodwill”, with pilots who are members of the PPU working strictly to their contract.”It is possible that this may leave some flights not covered for the duration of any action, which has the potential to continue indefinitely,” said a statement. A number of charities, including Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, have benefited from the £20 million raised by the Presidents Club over more than 30 years. Great Ormond Street Hospital has performed a U-turn and will keep £530,000 raised by the Presidents Club for its cause over a number of years. The charity originally pledged to return the money following allegations uncovered in a newspaper about the behaviour of guests at a black-tie dinner run by the Presidents Club, alleging female waitresses were groped. But a spokesman for the Charity’s trustees said that it had reversed its decision following feedback from supporters and discussions with the Charity Commission. He said: “Our thinking is always guided by our aim to maximise the support we give to the hospital and the families it cares for.”Following feedback from our supporters, guidance from the Charity Commission and taking into account the impending closure of the Presidents Club Charitable Trust, the trustees have decided to retain the funds donated by the trust. “We would like to thank all of our donors for their support, it is only through their generosity that we can make a difference for seriously ill children cared for at the hospital.”Great Ormond Street follows Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity in deciding to keep money raised for it by the event, which featured high-value items and experiences auctioned to raise funds. Congratulations to our employees for operating a safe and productive workplace.”To qualify for the eight-state award, mines must have produced substantial coal volumes without a reportable safety incident during 2012. Mines then were compared using incident rate data as reported to MSHA for the calendar year. The RMCMI bestowed a total of three safety awards in 2013 to Arch Coal subsidiaries, including Thunder Basin’s Coal Creek mine in the surface mine category. F/V Pacific Knight (Photo courtesy of Bruce Ilutsik)A salvage team is in the process of refloating the F/V Pacific Knight this week. The ship sank on July 25. It had been operating in Bristol Bay as a tender during the commercial salmon fishing season. The United States Coast Guard has not yet determined what caused the vessel to capsize.Listen nowAn oil sheen emanating from the wreckage disrupted commercial fishing in the Nushagak District for nearly a week. It is still unclear how much fuel spilled. The initial Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Report estimated that the Pacific Knight was carrying 800 gallons of diesel and 300 gallons of hydraulic fluid. However, in the week after the boat sank, a dive team with the Resolve Marine, the company contracted to salvage the boat, removed 1,400 gallons of fuel from the vessel.“Because the numbers don’t actually add up, which is not actually that unusual to be honest with you, it’s real difficult to say exactly what got spilled,” Todd Duke, a Resolve Marine manager, said. The company is now going through the labor intensive process of raising and refloating the Pacific Knight.“The past few days we’ve been passing chains underneath the vessel and connecting them to our crane barge,” Duke explained. “We’ve turned it, and we’ve picked the vessel so it’s sitting somewhat upright now. We’ve been using a tool we call an airlift to remove sand and silt from around the vessel so that we can get the chains underneath, and we’ll continue doing some airlift and more chain connections to go ahead and lift this thing completely out of the water.”Once the ship is lifted, Resolve Marine will attempt to stabilize it so it will float on its own. Then the Pacific Knight will be towed to Dutch Harbor where stakeholders can examine the vessel further.Duke estimates it will take about a week to refloat, stabilize and move the boat. The USCG is continuing its investigation into the situation. read more

-A group of American lawyers on Monday filed a federal lawsuit in New York against Donald Trump, accusing the US president of violating a constitutional ban on accepting payments from foreign governments.Trump dismissed the suit as “totally without merit.”The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is pursuing Trump over his vast business holdings, from which the billionaire has refused to divest fully, saying that as president he can have no conflict of interest. The decision not to divest has drawn fire from Democratic Party opponents and the government watchdog on ethics.CREW says Trump’s business properties abroad operate based partly on goodwill from foreign governments and regulators, but that under the US Constitution no federal official can receive a gift or “emolument” from a foreign government.“Never before have the people of the United States elected a president with business interests as vast, complicated, and secret as those of Donald J. Trump,” said the 37-page lawsuit.“Now that he has been sworn into office as the 45th president of the United States, those business interests are creating countless conflicts of interest, as well as unprecedented influence by foreign governments,” it added.Trump, the wealthiest man ever to become US president, has handed over the running of Trump Organization, which has a network of hotels, golf clubs and luxury residences across 20 countries, to his two adult sons.“Without merit. Totally without merit,” the Republican president responded in answer to a question after signing executive orders in the Oval Office.CREW cited payments from guests at Trump Organization hotels and golf courses and property leases by foreign governments as examples of “cash and favors.”Trump’s lawyer Sheri Dillon said January 11 that Trump would donate all proceeds from any foreign officials to his hotels to the US Treasury, and that he “should not be expected to destroy the company he built.”The lawsuit, which a CREW spokesman said was filed Monday, is not seeking damages other than attorneys costs.“We were forced to take legal action,” CREW executive director Noah Bookbinder said in a statement. “It was our hope that President Trump would take the necessary steps to avoid violating the Constitution before he took office.”But John Coffee, professor at New York’s Columbia Law School and director of its Center on Corporate Governance, questioned its validity without direct or serious injury.“I am not saying they are making a political gesture, but others may make that inference,” he told AFP.Morgan, Lewis and Bockius, the law firm for which Dillon works, told AFP it did not comment on its clients nor the work it does for them. read more
In this Nov. 18, 2018, file photo, Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks speaks after an NFL football game against the Oakland Raiders, in Glendale, Ariz. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri, File) Steve Wilks, Dec. 24“I always tell the coaches this: there’s always a bubble over the players’ head. As you sit there trying to talk to them, if you really understood what that bubble was saying back, you’d be amazed. There’s a bubble over my head, and if you really knew exactly how I felt inside and what I was saying, you would question my faith at times.”Wilks admitted he never showed his true feelings when dealing with the media. And as he said after the home finale, a loss to the Los Angeles Rams, he said he would leave the Cardinals with integrity just as he’d entered the job.Patrick Peterson, Dec. 27“I told guys (after the loss at Atlanta), Coach says he has to do a better job of putting guys in position. I have to tell Coach after that, me as a leader and a captain, I’m tired of hearing Coach say that. You have to get tired of getting your behind handed to you. It starts with you, it starts with us (players).”All along, even a once-disgruntled Peterson stood behind Wilks the man.Players continually took accountability without throwing their coach under the bus. And that was something Wilks refused to do to his players. Former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, Sept. 27“I don’t think it’s going to get any worse. It can only be better, I would think right now, pushing the ball up the field. I just don’t like the use of David Johnson in this offense. David Johnson is a premier wide receiver and I don’t see him out of the backfield creating the mismatches that he should be out creating and opening up things for Larry Fitzgerald.“David Johnson, people didn’t realize, he opened up stuff for Larry Fitzgerald because he was used in the slot opposite, or we always put him in position to be opposite of Larry and pick your poison. I got to see David Johnson being used properly for Josh Rosen to even be effective.”Arians exited the coaching ranks to become a CBS Sports analyst, and he didn’t hide his feelings about the Cardinals’ lack of offensive creativity when he joined the TD Fantasy Podcast just a few games into Wilks’ tenure. The former coach answered a question about Rosen by criticizing McCoy’s use of Johnson, who was used as a rusher around the center more than any other back in the league. Furthermore, Arizona rarely split him out as a receiver, something that made Johnson so dangerous in his 2016 season under Arians. Steve Wilks, Oct. 19“It’s not the mere fact of making it easier. And I told Byron this this morning. Josh is a very smart and intelligent guy. He can handle a lot.”“I think it’s clarity. That’s what we need, and we didn’t have that.”“With Byron being here before and being a part of that and understanding some of the success he’s had in the past, hopefully we can tap back on to some of the things David was doing in the past. When Wilks and the Cardinals fired McCoy and promoted Leftwich following a 45-10 loss to the Denver Broncos, it was about helping Rosen gain clarity in what was expected of him. But Wilks and Leftwich also discussed putting players like Johnson in a better position to succeed. That the green offensive coordinator did with limited success thanks to a maligned offensive line.CB Patrick Peterson, Oct. 24“I talk to Mr. Bidwill every day, almost each and every day of the week. We’re in a good place. We’ll move forward from what happened the other day. I certainly think we have a clear understanding. I have two years left on my contract. I’m here.”“It came at a bad time and I was just frustrated. You see the record.”Reports of Peterson asking for at trade request just before the deadline struck Wilks as a surprise. Just two days later, after meeting with Cardinals leaders, including owner Michael Bidwill, the star cornerback expressed his commitment to Arizona moving forward. Comments Share Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling – / 18 On Monday, after a 27-24 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Cardinals announced that Wilks had been relieved of his duties.Related LinksArizona Cardinals fire head coach Steve Wilks after one yearTaking a look back on the season, here is a collection of standout quotes from Wilks and others with the Cardinals that were telling of the coach’s brief tenure in the desert.Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill, Jan. 23“Not just a leader with a high football IQ, but also a high football EQ (emotional quotient). He just doesn’t coach football players, he coaches people. He knows where the players are 15 minutes after they walk into the training facility and makes sure where they are as people, because they aren’t going to be ready to learn and be well-coached if they’ve got any issues outside of the organization.”The Cardinals wrapped their search second-to-last among the seven teams who were in the market for new coaches last season.Hiring Wilks was lauded because of his leadership qualities. And though he proved that in Arizona, his schematic abilities with a defensive background didn’t shine through.Former offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, Jan. 29“You have your core, what you want to do and what you think you want to be known as but then it’s all about players. We have to adjust to the players we have. There’s going to be injuries during the season at a certain position. Well, if that next guy comes in, what does he do and what type of player he is?”Mike McCoy came in having coached quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow. The thought was he could squeeze the most out of his players based on their skillset. The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Later on, Peterson said he hoped to remain a Cardinal for life, just as his peer, Fitzgerald.GM Steve Keim, Dec. 7“If you told me back in August that we were starting this week with a rookie left tackle, rookie left guard and rookie center, I think you’d probably wonder who’s going home in a body bag. That’s not the case.”Joining Doug & Wolf on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station, GM Steve Keim spoke on the status of Arizona’s offensive line. Indeed, injuries to seven linemen who at one point or other played key roles played a huge part in the Cardinals’ offensive inabilities.Of course, Keim was speaking of the Cardinals on the field. But his comment stood out for the jobs that appear to have been lost.Steve Wilks, Dec. 17“I don’t really say it’s a broken record. I think you can never get away from it. Even if you talk to the playoff teams right now, the great teams, I guarantee you they still talking fundamentals and technique.“It’s not so much about always trying to over-scheme. The game hasn’t changed. It’s about leverage, it’s about angles, it’s about blocking, it’s about tackling; and we have to do a better job at all of them.”Asked if preaching technique and fundamentals made him feel like a broken record, Wilks held to his core beliefs even late in the year. It was a nice thought. McCoy failed to do much with veteran quarterback Sam Bradford or rookie Josh Rosen behind center. The same could be said about stars like Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson, whose production improved to some degree once McCoy was fired after Week 8 and replaced by former quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich.Steve Wilks, Aug. 15“I’m real pleased with the camp that we had this year. I thought we really came down here and accomplished a lot. Most importantly, trying to continue to emphasize and focus on the fundamentals and techniques of the game — trying to create that mindset, the physicality and most important the effort that’s going to sustain us throughout the year.”Wilks had his players stretch. Got to do a much better job getting off blocks, using our hands, getting downhill and fitting into our gaps.
